Expert Tips to Succeed in Work Placement

Let's get you set up for success!

Work placement is a win-win for students and employers. It equips you with crucial workplace skills to help you land your first job after graduation.

We know that starting placement might be daunting, but don’t worry. We’ve seen thousands of our students complete placement and gain full-time work in their chosen career.

And we’re confident that you’re next! Here are some expert tips to help you through Work Placement:

Just Breathe.

Don’t expect to learn everything all at once. Remember – placement can last anywhere from 250 to 480 hours. There’s plenty of time to learn everything you need. Your supervisor knows that you’re still learning. Typically, they will give you easier tasks at the beginning of your placement to develop your confidence.

As you work through the first days of your placement, you might find yourself becoming anxious. You might even start doubting yourself and your abilities. Don’t worry - this is normal! Most of our students doubt themselves at some point during placement. Take it one hour at a time, and always remember to breathe. You’ve got this!

Ask.

Never be embarrassed to ask questions. Your supervisor knows that you’re still learning, and the best way to learn is to speak up if you don’t understand something. Plus, speaking up shows that you’re taking the placement seriously. The more you ask, the more you’ll begin to understand your role. Moreover, asking questions is a great way to build your confidence in the industry setting, as well as a great way to get constructive feedback.

Take a Notebook.

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed when starting placement. That’s why a notebook is essential. Write down the names of your co-workers, what their title is, as well as the new terminology, and anything important you’ll think you’ll forget. And remember – any time you learn a new skill, write it down. You can add it to your CV later.

Keep Busy.

There might be quiet times during placement where there’s not a lot for you to do. If so -  don’t pull out your phone! You might be tempted to start texting your friends or scroll through Instagram, but it’s not worth the impression you’ll give to your co-workers and especially your supervisor.

Show initiative by tidying workspaces ("if there's time to lean, there's time to clean") or identifying tasks you can assist with. Remember – your workplace wants to see someone with drive, initiative, and resourcefulness.

Check your words and attitude.

Your attitude is so important. You’re allowed to be nervous, but don’t indulge in negative self-talk: “I’m no good at this. I keep making mistakes.”

Try, “I’m doing my best. I’m learning from my mistakes. I’ve got this!”

Being overly critical will affect your attitude and confidence. Plus, a good attitude is contagious. If you keep a friendly, positive outlook, you will make a great impression and people will want to work with you!

Finish well!

After you’ve finished your placement, make sure to send a thank you email - or even a card! Be grateful for the experience you’ve received, and if you’re lucky you’ll get a reference you can use for your CV (or they may even keep you in mind for the future).
