Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

We understand that you may already have many skills and areas of expertise that you have obtained in different ways and these are recognised through our Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process.

Course Duration

The duration for the course is self paced - maximum of 18 months. As a self-paced online course, the time it will take you to complete is flexible and dependent on ability and time available.

Entry Requirements

Recommended Local Entry Requirements

Students will need to be at least 16 years old. Students under 18 will need a parent or guardian to complete the parent or guardian declaration on the Enrolment Form.

Students residing in WA/NT under the age of 18, who are not currently studying for their year 12 certificate cannot be enrolled.

Students are recommended to have the language, literacy, and numeracy skills that ensure the ability to read and comprehend technical terms and communicate effectively through email.

These skills are equivalent to:

  • ACSF Level 3 OR
  • Successful completion of a nationally recognised Certificate III qualification or higher

Simulated Workplace Environment:

Students must have access to a specific place where they undertake their assessment activities.

The simulated work environment (approximately 3m x 4m) with available natural light, must include tools, equipment, and resources including:

  • A Smartphone
  • Digital SLR or mirrorless camera - A Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) camera (Canon or Nikon are recommended) with manual controls, raw file format, HD video capture and interchangeable lenses OR a Mirrorless Interchangeable Lens Camera (MILC) with an interchangeable lens with either a zoom lens or prime lens, manual controls, raw file format, HD video capture, and interchangeable lenses
  • A camera tripod, memory card
  • A graphics-capable monitor for accurate colour calibration (iMac recommended

A range of professional lighting equipment and accessories including:

  • a set of spring clamps and laundry pegs
  • 4-6 socket surge-protected power board and electrical extension cords
  • 3 lights to create a key, fill and backlight for a 'Three-point lighting' set-up. Portable LED lights are preferred. Alternatives: Halogen 150-250 Watts, Tungsten Lights, Daylight bulbs or Flashlight /Torch
  • 3 tripod stands (for lighting)
  • a table or worktop with trestles for studio work
  • background card size: A3 or A2: White, Black and optional Silver/ Gold/ Colours
  • aluminium foil (kitchen roll)
  • props - can be a series of selected objects that are appropriate and effective in an image composition - resourced from the learner's environment
  • a computer table and appropriate chair
  • anglepoise or other types of table lamp
  • dry storage space for camera equipment

'On location' means a suitable, safe environment often outside/ exterior that effectively responds to the constraints of an assessment brief and is flexible in respect of the learner's environment and location.

For unit CUAPHI412 Apply photo imaging lighting techniques students will need to access commercial lighting equipment depending on your design brief. Students will need to source, purchase, or hire this equipment.

Tools, equipment, and skills required:

  • Access to up to 3 people to participate in role plays and assessments
  • Access to models. These may be relatives or friends who are willing to sign a model release form
  • Access to a device with audio & video capabilities to record simulated role-play tasks for submission
  • Tripod to provide a stable and secure platform to mount the digital recording device
  • Basic computing skills
  • Students are required to have the physical capability to operate equipment and resources in a safe manner and to consider safe manual handling when working with lighting and photography equipment, props, and people
  • Access to a modern computer with high-speed internet
  • Access to Microsoft Office
  • Access to a printer / scanner

Software Requirements:

  • Paid subscription to Adobe Creative Cloud - Adobe Lightroom Classic CC and Photoshop CC (Refer to the Adobe website at https://www.adobe.com/ for current pricing)
  • Modern computer - MS Office 2016 or higher, Windows 8.1 or higher (Windows 10 recommended) or Mac OS El Capitan v 10.11.4, 1.3 GHZ min or faster processor, RAM - 8GB minimum (16 GB recommended), 1280 x 800 display, Hard disc storage (1TB or higher) and back up hard drive (1TB or higher)

Holding a Bachelor of Visual Communication (majoring in photography), a Bachelor of Secondary Teaching, Visual Arts, and a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, Lauren blends deep creative expertise with strong teaching skills.
Throughout her career, she has gained diverse experience interning for established photographers, working in photographic studios, and teaching in secondary schools. Most notably, she has run her own successful photography business — Lauren McConnell Photography — where she has captured lasting memories for families, couples and businesses. She also founded LMP The Studio, a dedicated space for creative work.

Lauren is deeply passionate about photography and considers herself fortunate to have built a career doing what she loves. As a trainer, she is eager to share her skills and knowledge with students who are just as enthusiastic about photography.
