Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

We understand that you may already have many skills and areas of expertise that you have obtained in different ways and these are recognised through our Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process.

Course Duration

The duration for the course is maximum 24 months. As a self-paced online course, the time it will take you to complete is flexible and dependent on ability and time available.

Entry Requirements

There are no training package entry requirements for this qualification.

To successfully complete this course, Open Colleges recommends that students:

  • Are 18 years old (note: students under 18 will need permission from a parent or guardian to enrol)
  • Have access to a modern computer with video / audio playback capabilities and high-speed internet
  • Have access to Microsoft Office or equivalent
  • Have basic computing skills, including ability to make a short video
  • Have access to a digital video recording device to save and upload video/image files to OpenSpace, e.g., mobile phone/smartphone.

Language, Literacy and Numeracy

Have language, literacy and numeracy skills that ensure the ability to work independently and use own familiar support resources, communicate effectively via email, and identify relevant information from a range of written texts. These skills are equivalent to those that would be required to successfully complete

  • Year 12 or ACSF Level 3, or
  • Certificate III level or higher

Physical Requirements

Learners will be required to operate office equipment and resources including photocopier, scanner and printer in a safe environment that includes an ergonomically sound computer workstation.

Audio-Visual Requirements

Learners need access to a digital camera, and related software, for taking photos for design tasks, projects and documenting the design processes.

Simulated Workplace Requirements

It is essential that learners have access to a specific place where they undertake their assessment activities. This work area should be designed as a home office area or design studio. Learners will be asked to submit photographic evidence of their simulated workplace facility prior to assessment in Study Period 1.


The simulated workplace facility may include tools, equipment and resources, including:

  • workstation/layout table and drawing board (MDF board with set squares and T-Square as a minimum)
  • ergonomic chair
  • bookshelves
  • filing system
  • desk lamp
  • computer (see computer requirements above)
  • internet access (see computer requirements above)
  • storage for drawing equipment.

Learners will also need:

  • access to an A4 – A3 printer or photocopier
  • access to a high-resolution colour printer
  • access to a high resolution, large format scanner

Zaid started working in the Interior Design field for an elite custom furniture company, focusing on 3D modelling in furniture and interior design for both commercial and residential projects. Zaid holds a Diploma of Interior Design and Decoration, along with a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.

He followed his passion for interior design and 3D modelling and now has years of experience, having worked on a variety of different interior design and furniture design projects. This experience enabled him to expand his knowledge of a variety of CAD, 3D modelling and rendering software. His passion for design drove him to start his own interior design studio.
